1Zpresso Q2 Review – The Best Budget Manual Grinder In 2024?

1Zpresso’s extensive lineup of grinders can lead to confusion, especially for those new to the brand. With a plethora of series and models, picking one of their grinders can be overhwleming.

The Mini Q series was their range of grinders that were billed as the best travel grinders or the best budget hand grinders.

The Q2 is their follow up to the Mini Q series. But who is the Q2 most suitable for, and is it still worth it in 2024?

I took it upon myself to unravel this mystery. After purchasing the 1Zpresso Q2, I used and tested it extensively for several months. Here’s what I found.

Summary: 1Zpresso Q2 Grinder

  • Extremely lightweight and portable
  • Well built and easy to use
  • High quality 38mm flat conical burrs
  • Great for Aeropress, filter coffee and coarser grinds
  • Incredible value for money at Price not available

Classic Build Quality And Aesthetics Of 1ZPresso Grinders

Upon unboxing the 1Zpresso Q2 coffee grinder, I was immediately struck by its minimalistic yet elegant design. The brushed aluminum alloy exterior, combined with a slightly textured faux-wood grip zone, exudes a premium feel akin to most grinders in the 1zpresso catalog.

The Q2 has the classic 1zpresso grinder look and feel

The Q2 comes in the classic 1Zpresso silver color, and the overall aesthetics align with the grinder’s quality, making it a visually appealing addition to any coffee setup.

The grinder has a somewhat small capacity of 20 to 25 grams per load, although this makes it more lightweight and portable.

Weighing in at 405 grams and with a diameter of 4.6 centimeters, the Q2’s compact size is portable, travel-friendly and comfortable for daily use. I love to travel with my Aeropress and the Q2 is the perfect companion as it fits perfectly inside it.

1Zpresso Q2 Grind Adjustment and Grind Settings

Adjusting the grind on the 1Zpresso Q2 manual grinder is a straightforward and user-friendly experience, thanks to the numbered dial located directly beneath the burr. I prefer the external adjustment system on the X-Pro, K series and J series models, but the internal system is still easy to use, albeit, not as good of a user experience.

The 1zpresso Q2 has an internal adjustment system

With 60 clicks per rotation, each equivalent to 12.5 microns, the dual bearing system ensures stable and consistent particle sizes across a wide range of settings.

Grinding 20 grams of light roast coffee beans takes about 45 seconds, and the grinder performs reasonably well with finer grind sizes like espresso, although it takes around 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Achieving a true espresso grind is challenging; the Q2 is far better suited for brewing methods that use a coarser grind size like French press, pour over, and Aeropress.

1ZPresso Q2 Burrs and Grind Performance

The 1Zpresso Q2 features a 38mm conical burr set constructed from grade 420 stainless steel, known for its impressive hardness and corrosion resistance. The Q2 is available with either pentagonal burrs or heptagonal burrs.

During my time with the grinder, I found that this durable burr set could handle daily grinding with ease, and the manufacturer suggests it can last up to a decade, even if you grind a pound of coffee each week.

The evenness of the grind in the 1Zpresso Q2 is maintained by a dual bearing system that ensures stable and consistent particle sizes. During my daily use, I found the grind to be uniform across various settings, providing a consistent flavor profile for different brewing methods.

When it comes to grinding for espresso, achieving a true fine grind was a bit challenging but not impossible. It took me around 1 minute and 40 seconds to grind a dose using a single-origin light roast coffee, but the resulting flavor in my morning espresso shots was well worth the time and effort.

The Q2 does a reasonable job at grinding for espresso with very fine size and good uniformity, though it does take a lot of work
Pro Tip: Seasoning the burrs of the Q2 is recommended as it creates many fines out of the box

Grinding for coarser methods like French press or cold brew was a more straightforward experience with the Q2. I easily adjusted to the coarser settings, and the grinder’s versatility allowed me to experiment with different textures, always delivering a satisfying cup. Whether I was preparing a robust French press or a refreshing cold brew, the Q2’s performance constantly exceeded expectations for a grinder at this price point.

1ZPresso Q2 vs Timemore Chestnut C2

When it comes to picking a manual coffee grinder that is both high-performing and affordable, in my opinion there are only 2 viable options. The choice is the 1zpresso Q2 vs Timemore Chestnut C2. Each of these outperforms the grind quality of many electric grinders that are priced much higher.

The Q2’s build quality feels more premium, with its brushed aluminum alloy exterior and stainless steel burrs, while the C2, although well-constructed, doesn’t feel as high-end. In terms of grind consistency, both grinders perform admirably, but the Q2’s has a slight edge in the evenness of the grind.

When it comes to grinding speed, the Timemore C2 grinds slightly faster, making it a more practical choice for larger batches.

The Q2 is better at espresso, but truthfully if you want a manual grinder for espresso, you should look at some different options in the JX series or the X-Pro. Both the Q2 and C2 grinders perform best with filter coffee. Overall, I think the Q2 is slightly better, but both are fantastic value for money.

The Perfect Travel Grinder Or Budget Pick

The Q2 1Zpresso grinder is hands down one of the best budget coffee grinders on the market. The performance of the Q2 rivals that of many electric grinders, but at a fraction of the price. It excels with manual brewing methods and is a pleasure to use with specialty coffee from my local roaster. Furthermore, it’s high-quality grind consistency belies the entry-level price.

Overall, I really like the 1zpresso Q2. It’s streets ahead of other hand grinders in the same price range like the Porlex Mini. It makes delicious coffee and it’s portability is a big plus for anybody that wants a travel coffee grinder. If you’re looking for a coffee grinder for camping, backpacking, work trips or simply a high quality hand grinder for filter coffee, then the Q2 is my favorite option on the market right now.
