BPA In Coffee Machines – Are Plastic Coffee Makers Really Safe?
Why use BPA at all when there is so much controversy about its safety?
The short answer is that Bisphenol A or BPA is needed to harden plastics.
In coffee makers, the inner parts like the water tank or the coffee filter basket are made of plastic. These parts are in direct contact with the hot water and the coffee you drink, which could be a cause for concern.
A couple of years ago, the FDA made an announcement (2) about the health effects of Bisphenol A:
There is “some concern” about developmental and reproductive problems in infants and children exposed to BPA.
You see, they specifically referred to infants and children.
But it led to a lot of controversial discussions among the experts on whether BPA is dangerous for adults too. The FDA has not, in any event, found any convincing evidence for BPA to be harmful (3) to adults.
Still, many coffee manufacturers have started making BPA-free coffee makers.
In my opinion, even when the FDA assures us that BPA is not harmful, I think it is better to be safe than sorry!
So your decision to search for a BPA-free coffee maker is a very smart move!

BPA-Free Drip Coffee Makers
Hamilton Beach 46205 – Reliably Good Coffee Maker And Guaranteed BPA-Free
The Hamilton Beach 46205 is a great and reliable drip coffee maker with the capability to brew 12 cups of coffee and a lot of nifty features.
It is a programmable coffee maker, which means you can set it up at night and wake up to freshly brewed coffee. You can also choose whether you want stronger or milder coffee. And the removable water reservoir makes it easy to clean too.
Although the inner parts are made of plastic, Hamilton Beach confirms that none of the components in contact with the contain any BPA.
Mr. Coffee Single Cup Coffee Maker SCGB200 – Healthy Single Cup Brewer
The Mr. Coffee Single Cup Coffee Maker is probably one of the best BPA-free coffee makers for a one-cup brew.
The removable filter basket of this coffee machine contains a blade grinder. So you can simply add freshly roasted coffee beans to start brewing coffee. But if you got a bag of coffee grounds for your birthday, then you can add that directly to the filter basket instead.
Need a caffeine shot in the morning but always in a rush? No time for coffee at the breakfast table?
Well, then Mr. Coffee SCGB200 is the perfect coffee maker for you. Just place your “To-Go” Coffee Mug (included with the coffee maker) under the brew dispenser and let it drip.
BPA-Free Drip Coffee Makers With Grinder
Breville BDC650BSS – Coffee For The Whole Family & 100% BPA-Free
This Breville 12 cup coffee maker with a built-in burr grinder is perfect for you if you love brewing freshly ground coffee. No more buying pre-ground coffee!
Also included is a stainless steel thermal carafe to keep your coffee hot, which is great if you want to brew coffee in the morning for everyone in the family.
Even though there are a lot of plastic parts inside this coffee machine, including the removable hopper that can hold a half-pound of coffee beans, none of the parts contain BPA.
While it’s been reported that the highest possibility of BPA (3) leaching into food is when something is being heated, it’s still calming to know that Breville’s bean hopper is not leaching any BPA into your coffee beans. To be honest, it is one of the best BPA-free coffee makers out there.
Cuisinart DGB Coffee Maker – Grind And Brew And BPA-Free
I can confirm that all of the DGB-models from Cuisinart, including this 12 cup coffee maker with a built-in burr grinder doesn’t contain any BPA!
And since I have a more detailed post about this Cuisinart coffee maker and other coffee makers with a grinder, I don’t think it’s necessary to repeat myself here.
Plastic-Free Coffee Maker And All-Metal Coffee Makers
If you are completely against plastic in coffee makers whether due to the possible aftertaste or the health concern with BPA, you have the option of switching to 100% BPA-free coffee makers if you don’t mind brewing your coffee manually.
Well, almost 100% BPA-free. Some parts that are not in contact with the water or coffee grounds (like the handle) could still be made of plastic. But that’s about it.
I have looked around and think I have found some of the best options for you to feel 100% safe with these BPA-free coffee makers.
Stainless Steel And Ceramic French Press
The Bodum Columbia Press Pot is, in my opinion, the perfect BPA-free coffee maker for French Press enthusiasts. You can check it out in more detail in the video.
In the list below, I have added two more recommendations for a manual coffee brewer: a stainless steel French Press from Secura and a ceramic Press from Le Creuset. I made sure that all the parts, including the inner plungers and filters, are 100% BPA-free!
Secura Stainless Steel French Press Coffee Maker 18/10 Bonus Stainless Steel Screen (1000ML)
Le Creuset Stoneware 27-Ounce French Press Coffee Maker, Marseille
Stainless Steel Coffee Percolators
Coffee Percolators have been gaining popularity in home kitchens again thanks to the simplicity of their use.
Most percolators are BPA-free as they are made of stainless steel. The only plastic parts may be the seal or the handle.
The Presto 02811 is one of the most popular percolator-style brewer, and I can recommend it wholeheartedly. Although Presto confirmed that all parts that come in contact with water are 100% BPA-free, it is not 100% stainless steel. The perk well of the Presto 02811 is made of aluminum, which is considered food-safe. But some people might be concerned about the hot coffee coming in contact with it.
Most of these coffee makers are made of aluminum while some are made of stainless steel, but all of them are BPA-free.
The Bialetti 6800 Moka Express 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker is one of the best Moka Pots on the market. The unmistakably octagon-shaped pot is made of 100% BPA-free polished aluminum. Only the handle is made of plastic.
The famous hourglass-shaped coffee brewer is 100% glass and a beauty to look at. As opposed to the dark, rich brew from a French Press, the Chemex makes a sweet, clean cup of coffee.
However, it is a manual coffee maker. You need to learn how to pour the hot water over the grounds properly to get the best results, and you need special Chemex filters.
It may be a hot commodity in the hipster coffee community, but without any plastic, it is definitely a 100% BPA-free coffee maker.
Pour Over Filter Coffee Maker
They are not as convenient as drip coffee makers because you have to pour the heated water manually over the grounds.
And because it’s ceramic, it’s guaranteed BPA-free!
If you want to enjoy a safe and healthy cup of coffee, choose a BPA-free coffee maker or one of the plastic-free coffee makers above.
If you aren’t sure about whether your favorite coffee maker contains any BPA, feel free to contact me. I will do the work for you!
