Keurig Coffee Maker Types

Single serve – This original Keurig machine is still the most popular. This brews one cup of coffee at a time using a single K-Cup, but the size of the cup is often adjustable.

Carafe – In an attempt to compete with drip coffee makers, some Keurig models will brew full carafes of coffee. Previously these required special sized K-Cup pods, but the latest Keurig models use coffee grounds.

Commercial machines Built to stand up to heavy use, these Keurig coffee makers are more powerful, and you can often plumb them directly to avoid the need for refilling. Some may even have NSF certification (1).

Keurig 2.0 – In 2015, the brand introduced the Keurig 2.0 line of coffee makers, with increased customization and new features. The 2.0 has now been discontinued, but you can still find reconditioned machines online. To read more, check out our Keurig K575 review or the Keurig K200 Plus.

Other features of Keurig coffee machines

Capacity and size – Even if your machine is a single-serve coffee maker, capacity does matter. The size of the water tank will determine how long you can go before refilling and impact the overall size of the machine.

Versatility – Even on the most basic models, you should get a choice of cup sizes, but more advanced Keurig coffee makers will let you change the brew strength, brew temperature, or brew for iced coffee.

My K-Cup compatibility – if you want to cut down on waste, check that your Keurig pod coffee maker is compatible with the My K-Cup reusable coffee filter. Keurig has followed in the footsteps of Nespresso and now its K-Cup pods are recyclable, but the system still has some issues (2).

K Cups VS My K-Cups

The Best Keurig Coffee Makers

Keurig’s enduring popularity means that you have plenty of machines to choose from, whether you’re buying for yourself or you need to brew for a crowd. Here’s our pick for the best Keurig coffee makers.

1. Keurig K-Elite – Best Overall

Keurig K-Elite

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 13.1 x 9.9 x 12.7 inches

  • Water reservoir: 75 oz
  • Brew sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 oz
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup

If you’re looking for a single-serve coffee maker that encompasses all of the best aspects of a Keurig, this is it. The K-Elite is quick and convenient and has enough features to enhance your brewing without making life complicated.

The five different brew sizes help you get different intensities from your K-Cup, with the option of a “strong” brew setting for more kick. The “ice” button will make an even stronger brew, preventing it from tasting diluted when poured over ice.

This is one of the few Keurig machines that offer temperature control, with settings from 187 to 192 F. Finally, there’s a high altitude brewing setting, which will ensure your machine still performs well above 5,000 feet (3).

The K-Elite brew time is less than a minute, but for an early morning cup, you can take advantage of the auto-on programming. It won’t brew your coffee for you, but it means the machine will be preheated when you get up.

The icing on the cake is the brushed metal casing that makes it look a lot more expensive than the price tag.

2. Keurig K-Classic – Best Value for Money

Keurig K-Classic

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 13 x 9.8 x 13.3 inches

  • Water reservoir: 48 oz
  • Brew sizes: 6, 8 and 10 oz
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup

If the bells and whistles of the latest Keurig machines seem unnecessary, you can save a chunk of cash by opting for the Keurig K-Classic. Brewing is as simple as it gets – the only choice you have to make is your cup size.

The K-Classic is by no means a step-down. You’re still getting the same quality and speed as other Keurig coffee makers, with a quick, consistent brew in under a minute. User-friendly features include a removable water reservoir for easy refilling, a removable drip tray to fit travel mugs up to 7.1 inches, and a 2-hour automatic shutoff.

3. Keurig K-Mini – Best for Small Households

Keurig K-Mini

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 12.1 x 4.5 x 11.3 inches

  • Water reservoir: 12 oz
  • Brew sizes: 6 – 12 oz
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup

The Keurig K-Mini was introduced as an upgrade (and downsize) to the Keurig K-15 and is now the brand’s slimmest coffee machine. At less than 5 inches wide, you really can fit this brewer anywhere.

The tiny size does mean that the water reservoir only holds enough for a single cup and needs to be refilled for each cup of coffee. The unexpected benefit of this is that you can brew precisely the amount of coffee you want, between 6 and 12 oz. The removable drip tray makes room for travel mugs up to 7 inches.

The K-Mini isn’t quite as powerful as its bigger brothers, with a brewing time of around two minutes. There’s also no strong brew option here, but you can get that with the slightly more expensive K-Mini Plus.

Looking for the older model? Read our Keurig K15 review here. Don’t want to refill every time? Take a look at the Keurig K-Slim coffee maker.

4. Keurig K155 Office Pro – Best for Small Offices

Keurig K155 Office Pro

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 13.9 x 10.4 x 14 inches

  • Water reservoir: 90 oz
  • Brew sizes: 4, 6, 8 and 10 oz
  • Brews with: K-Cups

The original Keurig machines were developed for commercial use, and they can still be a great choice for offices. The wide range of K-Cup flavors makes them suitable for all kinds of coffee, tea or hot chocolate drinkers, and the quick brew time won’t take up too much of your coffee break.

Operating the K155 is simple, with the cup size selected via the LCD screen.

For more options, office managers can enter the menu to adjust the default brew size (preset for an 8-ounce cup), or the brew temperature – up to 5 degrees on either side of the preset 193 F.

The large 90 oz water reservoir means this machine is a lot bigger than home models, but depending on your brew size, you can get 18 cups of coffee out of this before you need to refill.

5. Keurig K-Café – Best for Latte Lovers

Keurig K-Café

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 12.5 x 15.3 x 11.7 inches

  • Water reservoir: 60 oz
  • Brew sizes: 2 oz shot, 6, 8, 10, and 12 oz cups
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup

Fans of barista style drinks like cappuccinos are now included in the Keurig family with the K-Cafe.

Your specialty drink starts with a 2 oz concentrated coffee, made by hitting the “shot” button. We like that it doesn’t require special coffee pods; you can make this with any Keurig K-Cup. If you’re after a regular coffee, the machine also makes four cup sizes and has a strong brew setting.

…able to make lattes and cappuccinos quicker than it often takes to place an order at Starbucks.

Wired

The attached milk frother works using magnets, so it’s quicker than both steam and electric versions. Plus it won’t deplete your water tank. It has settings for lattes and cappuccinos, plus a cold button to froth milk for iced coffee. The milk frother is also dishwasher safe.

6. Keurig K-Duo Plus – Most Versatile

Keurig K-Duo Plus

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 14.9 x 7.7 x 15.9 inches

  • Water reservoir: 60 oz
  • Brew sizes: 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz cups; 6, 8, 10 or 12 cup carafe
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup, ground coffee

With its K-Duo models, Keurig appeals to those who might be torn between a drip machine and a single-serve. These Keurig coffee makers will do both.

The single-serve brewing works like a regular Keurig and can only be done with a pod. You have the choice of four cup sizes, plus a strong setting. The high clearance will fit a mug up to 7.25 inches or 8 inches with the drip tray removed.

The carafe setting has all the features you’d expect from a good drip machine.

The Keurig K-Duo offers a range of carafe sizes, a permanent coffee grounds filter, Pause and Pour brewing, and a 24-hour programmable start. The 12-cup thermal carafe will keep your coffee hot for up to two hours.

The versatility extends to the design. That is, you can switch a water reservoir between the rear or to either side. It’s a great feature that lets you fit the machine into tricky spaces.

7. Keurig K-Supreme Plus Smart Brewer – Best Smart Brewer

Keurig K-Supreme Plus Smart Brewer

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 13.4 x 8.3 x 12.4 inches

  • Water reservoir: 78 oz
  • Brew sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup

What can a smart coffee maker do for you? Well, the Keurig K-Supreme Plus Smart Brewer lets you brew coffee using voice activation and control the machine remotely using the app – right down to customize your drink. It also has a unique BrewId feature, which will identify the flavor of K-Cup you’re using and adjust the settings for the best flavor.

The K-Supreme Plus Smart Brewer allows you to select from five brew settings, five strength settings, and six temperature settings, plus an “over ice” option. Like the other K-Supreme models, this uses Keurig’s MultiStream technology, which extracts more flavor from each single-serve pod (4).

This level of versatility, plus the capacity for back-to-back-brewing, makes this an ideal K-Cup coffee maker for a busy household.

8. Keurig K-Express – Budget Pick

Keurig K-Express

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 12.6 x 4.6 x 12.9 inches

  • Water reservoir: 42 oz
  • Brew sizes: 8, 10 and 12 oz
  • Brews with: K-Cups, My K-Cup

If you’ve got a little more counter space, the K-Express will give you something of an upgrade in features on the K-Mini, but without an increase in the price.

This model features a 42 oz removable water reservoir. It’s not huge but will allow you to brew four 10 ounce cups without refilling. It also offers back-to-back brewing, so there’s no need to wait for reheating between cups.

There are just three cup sizes available – 8, 10, and 12 oz – but the “strong” brew button will help you tweak each brew’s flavor.

The Verdict

The Keurig brewing system is largely the same across models, but the difference in size, versatility and price will determine the best machine for you. For the best all-rounder, we recommend the K-Elite. The large reservoir and good range of features at an affordable price makes it an excellent pick for pretty much any household.

Keurig K-Elite

FAQs

You clean your Keurig machine by filling the water reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and clean water. Run the coffee maker through brewing cycles (without a K-Cup), until the reservoir is empty. Let the machine rest for 30 minutes, then repeat the process using water only to flush the vinegar from the system.

You can use a K-Cup twice, but the second brew will produce a weak and watery coffee. This isn’t suitable for a separate drink, but you can brew a K-Cup twice in the same cup to produce an Americano-style coffee.

You can find out what Keurig model you have by looking up the machine’s serial number online. The serial number will be located in three places: on the machine’s underside, behind the drip tray, or the water reservoir (5).
