What are the Best Keurig Coffee Maker Models?

If you want your coffee to be ready fast, you need to get a Keurig coffee maker. However, speed is not the only thing that makes this brand so popular. In fact, the brew quality may even trick you into believing that you are sipping something made in an espresso machine.

But choosing the best Keurig coffee maker is no easy task due to the number of different options. This shouldn’t worry you too much, though, because this article will introduce you to the top contenders to the throne.

How to choose the right Keurig for your needs

Both commercial and home series Keurigs share a lot of features, which might make the final choice a bit tricky. To help you find just the right machine, we’ll take a closer look at all the desirable features. [1]

Did you know that the first K-Cup pods and machines came to life more than 20 years ago? They were made by hand and were notoriously unreliable.

K-Cup Sizes

Each Keurig coffee maker can take three basic K-Cup sizes which are 6, 8, and 10 ounces. Some models work with 4-ounce and 12-ounce cups as well, which is great if you like espresso pods or want to fill up a travel mug.

There are also carafe pods that fit Keurig’s Plus series models. They usually hold 0.92 ounces of grounds and may provide enough brew to fill up a 30-ounce carafe. [2] That said, the amount of brew per pod may vary depending on the type of beverage.

To be exact, specific ground formulation, type of grind, and roast level affect how much coffee you get. It’s worth noting that the Keurig machines fit not only Keurig carafes but also certain third-party models. As those are sold separately, it is best to double-check if the carafe is Keurig-ready.

Brewing Controls

Despite being convenient one-touch coffee makers, most Keurigs give you a decent level of control over the brewing process. Not as much control as you will get with a pour over coffee maker, but still; a surprising amount. There are two settings you can adjust – the brew strength and temperature.

The default temperature is usually 192°F, which is just a hair lower than the ideal ballpark of 195°F-205°F. [3] Remember that water temperature is crucial to get the perfect brew, which is why it pays to spend a bit more and get more control over your coffee.

It really kinda depends on the coffee you are using. Try different temperatures, cause I find that different temperatures render different flavors from different plants.” – Gail, Seattle Coffee Gear

As for the strength controls, changing the cup size is a neat trick to increase or decrease the strength. With Keurig machines, there is often a Strength button that allows you to choose two or three presets. This is great for offices and large households where members prefer different punch to their coffee.

Water Tank Capacity

There are Keurigs that come with tanks larger than 80 or 90 ounces, but there’s no reason to immediately go for the largest tank you can find. The water capacity should match your needs.

Assuming the 8-ounce cup is the one you are most likely to brew, this kind of capacity allows you to get 10 or more cups without a refill. But Keurigs with single-cup water tanks (like the K15, for example) work great if you are not sharing the unit with anybody.

In addition to capacity, consider getting a Keurig with a removable tank, as it makes maintenance much easier.

Which water should you use with a Keurig machine?

It is best to use bottled or filtered water for single serve K-Cup machines. There is no need for a fancy filtration system, as the one that hooks to your faucet should be enough to remove most of the impurities that may affect the brew taste.

But before you go out and get a water filter, check what kind of water you have at home or in the office. This helps you find the right filtration system to remove surplus minerals which might be the reason for a subpar brew.

The water mineral content of 150 to 200 parts per million is the right ballpark for great extraction. If it’s softer than that, the brew will become weak and lose its flavor profile.

Brewing Speed

Keurig’s brewing speeds are hard to match, and you get a single cup of coffee in under a minute. There are some models that brew a single cup for a bit longer (90 or 120 seconds), but it’s still fast compared to drip brewers, for example.

Other Features

Scheduled brewing, energy-saving, and reminders are also nice to have. Newer Keurigs allow you to set the brewing up to 24 hours in advance and have a cup ready by the time you reach the kitchen in the morning.

In terms of energy-saving, you shouldn’t expect something that can significantly lower your power bill. Still, the automatic shut-off function is more than welcome should you forget to power off the machine. Some units feature an alarm that notifies you when it’s time for maintenance or when your coffee is ready.

Finally, it is always great to get an LCD screen on your coffee machine. Even better, make it a touchscreen. With Keurig, you don’t need to break the bank to get a touchscreen coffee maker.

Accessories

There are not too many accessories that come with Keurig coffee makers. You may get a package of pods, a travel mug, or a K-Cup holder. These are usually Keurig bundles where you pay a bit more than just for the machine itself. With this in mind, you don’t really need a travel mug or a K-Cup holder, but a package of pods is a nice addition that can help you find the perfect flavor more easily. If hot coffee is important to you, consider a thermal coffee maker instead – here’s a list to start with.

  • 48-ounce capacity
  • Brewing time: 1 minute
  • Makes coffee, iced coffee, tea, etc.
  • Features auto shut-off functionality
  • Available in three colors

Compared to the K-Elite, the K-Classic is a step down, but this is not a deal-breaker by any means. You are still getting a lot of the premium features, though there are certain compromises in terms of versatility and materials.

The K-Classic is made of high-quality plastic and has a 48-ounce water reservoir which should be enough to brew about 6 cups of coffee. It takes 6-ounce, 8-ounce, and 10-ounce K-Cups, which gives you enough versatility to have a great brew at any time of the day.

Best suited for any budget, and the capacity is enough for families and even small offices.

3. Keurig K-Mini Coffee Maker – The Best Compact K-Cup Machine

Keurig K-Mini Coffee Maker

  • 4.4×11.3×12.1 inches, 4.6 pounds
  • Takes four K-Cup sizes
  • Brewing time: a few minutes
  • Has cord storage to ensure easy transport
  • Accessories: no

This single-serve K-Cup machine is one small mean brewer. What’s best about it, the K-Mini brews any K-Cup size from 6 all the way up to 12 ounces. But there is a catch. Due to its petite nature, this model has a water reservoir that’s good enough for only one cup at a time.

In fairness, this only means you need to change your brewing method a little. Fill up the cup with water, pour it into the reservoir, place the cup, and there you go. But, how small is this machine? It measures 4.4×11.3×12.1 inches and weighs 4.6 pounds.

As such, the K-Mini wouldn’t look out of place on your desktop. Speaking of appearances, the model in this review is satin black and there are four other color options. However, aesthetics is only one of the things that landed this model on this list.

Like its bigger counterparts, the K-Mini’s brewing speed is second to none. It has a removable tray and can hold mugs up to 7 inches tall. You get a few brewing presets to choose from and it all comes at a price that can put a smile on your face.

Best suited for singles, students, professionals working from home, and anybody who enjoys a nice cup of coffee but is strapped for space.

You also get water temperature controls, as well as auto turn-on and shut-off functionality. On top of all that, this machine is very quiet.

Best suited for for small and medium businesses, but its brewing capacity is also great for large households.

Keurig K-Cafe K-Cup Machine

Speaking of cup sizes, the K-Cafe is compatible with 2-ounce, 6-ounce, 8-ounce, 10-ounce, and 12-ounce K-Cups, but you cannot remove the drip tray.

  • 48oz removable water tank
  • Brewing time: less than 1 minute

This machine measures 12.9x15x16.7 inches and weighs about 14 pounds. It is not exactly the most compact model you can find, but it is a small price to pay for the B145’s usability and other features. You get a 48 oz removable water reservoir, which means it’s good for five or more cups of coffee.

8. Keurig K15 Mini Plus – The Best Keurig for Small Households and Singles

Keurig K15 Mini Plus

Specifications

  • 6.9×10.7×10.8 inches
  • The water tank is enough for one cup of coffee
  • Easily fits a 4-inch mug
  • Brewing time: under 2 minutes
  • Single-button operation
  • Accessories: 6-count K-cup variety pack

A step up from its petite cousin, the K15 Mini Plus shares a lot of the characteristics with much bigger models. It takes three K-Cup sizes (6, 8, and 10 ounces), features a display, and is compatible with My K-Cup filters.

As for the dimensions, the K15 single-serve measures 6.9×10.7×10.8 inches. The overall design is kind of boxy, but it has a special appeal and, of course, you get to choose different colors. In addition to regular coffee, this machine is also capable of brewing iced beverages, tea, hot cocoa, and more.

With the drip tray on, you can place a 4-inch tall mug. If you remove it, the K15 holds a 5-inch mug and maybe even a little taller. So if you are planning to fill up a travel mug, this might not be the best machine.

Another thing that’s worth noting is the brewing time. Unlike most other models, the K15 has your brew ready in under two minutes. The difference is not that great and it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for most people.

Best suited for students and small families.

9. Keurig K575 Coffee Maker – The Best Keurig for Carafe Pods

Keurig K575 Coffee Maker

Specifications

  • 10.5×13.2×13.3 inches
  • 80-ounce water reservoir
  • Takes 5 regular pod sizes and 3 carafe pod sizes
  • Brewing time: under 1 minute
  • Color touchscreen display
  • Accessories: no

The Keurig K575 has a lot going in its favor. It has one of the largest water reservoirs (80 ounces), a color touchscreen display, as well as a removable drip tray.

As for the regular pod capacity, the K575 is neck-and-neck with some other models, and it takes five different sizes of pods – 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 ounces. The carafe pod capacity is where this model excels as you can brew with 22-ounce, 26-ounce, and 30-ounce carafe pods. It’s not hard to calculate that you might make three carafes without refilling the machine – if you use smaller pods, of course.

Like most Keurig machines, this model allows you to customize brewing to your liking. There are five temperature controls to choose from and you can also zero in on the brew strength, regardless of the K-Cup type. Plus, you get a Favorites preset so you don’t need to tweak the settings every time.

The K575 has on-demand hot water and a removable drip tray. Without the drip tray, there is enough room for 7.2-inch travel mugs.

Best suited for medium-sized and large households or anybody else who needs a lot of coffee fast.

10. Keurig K1500 Single Cup Coffee Maker – The Keurig with the Largest Water Reservoir

Keurig K1500 Single Cup Coffee Maker

Specifications

  • Brews 4 K-Cup sizes
  • A 96-ounce water reservoir
  • Quiet-Brew technology
  • High altitude mode (works at 5,000 feet)
  • Accessories: no

With a 96-ounce capacity, the K1500 has a water reservoir that’s twice the size of some other Keurigs. This model takes four cup sizes between 6 and 12 ounces. It might not be that impressive, but you could brew six 12-ounce cups and have some water left for a 6-ounce pod.

The K1500 reservoir is transparent, so you can easily see how much water you have left. Of course, it is completely removable and there are two handles for easier refilling. The machine works with more than 150 pods from Keurig, including the 2.0 models.

Another great thing about this coffee maker is the low noise it produces. That’s thanks to the Quiet-Brew Technology this unit uses. Plus, there is a high altitude mode which allows the K1500 to run smoothly at more than 5,000 feet.

Most importantly, all of this comes at a price that fits most budgets, and there is also an option to order a package that includes 192 K-Cup pods.

Best suited for small businesses or large families.

11. Keurig K3000SE – The Most Compact Commercial Keurig Coffee Maker

Keurig K3000SE

Specifications

  • 12x17x18 inches, 37 pounds
  • Automatic empty pod disposal
  • Can hold larger cups
  • Accessories: no

Want a machine that doesn’t take too much space, yet satisfies the needs of your employees or co-workers? If so, the Keurig K3000SE should tick all the right boxes.

To begin with, this maker measures 12x17x18 inches and weighs 37 pounds. It might not be the lightest commercial brewer out there, but the K3000SE does have the lowest footprint. It’s important to note that there is no removable water reservoir in this unit.

The K3000SE is designed to be fitted to plumbing, but the fixtures are not part of the package. On the upside, this engineering solution allows the unit to continually churn out a cup of coffee every minute. The machine brews four cup sizes – 4, 6, 8, and 10 ounces, and you can flip the drip tray to place large mugs.

There is also a rather large LED display, but it’s not touch-controlled. This Keurig also automatically ejects and stores empty pods. The only possible downside is the price, seeing as the K3000SE is one of the most expensive Keurigs currently on the market.

BEST SUITED FOR – large businesses, convention centers, and other high-frequency venues.

12. Mixpresso K-Cup Coffee Maker – The Best Keurig Alternative

Mixpresso K-Cup Coffee Maker

Specifications

  • Removable water reservoir (45 ounces)
  • Compatible with first and second-generation Keurig pods
  • Auto shut-off after 15 minutes
  • Accessories: no
  • Comes with a 12-month warranty

Mixpresso might not be a household name like Keurig, but the model in this review can give some Keurigs a good run for the money. So, what are the characteristics that make it stand up to Keurig?

To make things clear, this Mixpresso belongs to the category of compact K-Cup machines for home use. It brews three pod sizes (6, 8, and 10 ounces) and works with 1.0 and 2.0 Keurig pods. The water reservoir capacity is 45 ounces, which should be enough for 4-6 brews without a refill.

Like Keurig, Mixpresso is quite fast, but the manufacturer doesn’t specify the exact brewing time. However, it does say that the auto shut-off feature initiates 15 minutes after the machine has been idling. You get a 12-month limited warranty and there are three colors to choose from.

Overall, this coffee maker may be a good replacement for the K15 Mini Plus, for example. However, other Keurigs offer superior water capacity and better K-Pod compatibility.

BEST SUITED FOR –  those who’ve never owned a K-Cup machine – this Mixpresso can be a good starter model.

FAQs

1. Can you descale Keurig with vinegar?

Yes, you can descale a Keurig with vinegar and it’s advisable to do it every 3-6 months of regular use. You can fill the water reservoir halfway with white vinegar, add water to fill it up, and run brewing cycles until the tank is empty. After that, repeat the process with clean water to rinse it all out.

2. Can you use K-Cups twice?

In theory, you can use K-Cups twice, but you should never do it. The cups are designed to be single-use disposable cups, and the second-time brew is not going to be as satisfying as the first. Running a single cup through the brewing cycle twice will over-extract the coffee and deliver a weak, tea-like beverage.
