A Quick Review of the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741

The Technivorm Moccamaster is one of few drip coffee makers certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, a rigorous standard that prioritizes good coffee. Handmade in the Netherlands, this coffee machine is top quality and built to last.

Its best feature is a unique dual-coil copper heater, which heats the water quickly to the precise brewing temperature needed for the best coffee extraction.

Brewing – 4.5/5

Any of the best SCAA-certified coffee makers will deliver a delicious cup of coffee, thanks to the thorough set of criteria. (1)

Developed by coffee science experts and professional coffee tasters, this program reviews brewers designed for in-home use to determine if they meet the rigorous requirements of brewed coffee quality as determined by the SCA.

SCAA

There are no bells and whistles here, but you can put any ground beans in the Moccamaster and feel confident in receiving a properly extracted carafe of rich coffee. The coffee brewing process takes just 6 minutes for a 10-cup carafe.

This machine loses a point compared with other SCAA-certified models because it lacks a pre-infusion option. Although you can do it manually, it’s still an inconvenience in a machine at this price.

Design – 4.5/5

Technivorm coffee machines are handmade in the Netherlands and globally recognized for their high quality. (2)

The Moccamaster is functional, beautiful to look at, and built to last.

It’s primarily made of BPA-free plastic, wrapped in a protective aluminum exterior, but the water heating tank is stainless steel to avoid possible leaching of plastic taste.

The water reservoir has a wide mouth for easy filling, with clear marks in both cups and liters. The expertly machined parts come apart easily for cleaning.

One note is that the Moccamaster is tall, at 15.5″, so it might not fit easily beneath all cupboards. However, at 7″ x 12″, a footprint of its base is quite compact.

Special Features – 4/5

The Moccamaster is a no-frills machine by design, not a showcase for special features. You won’t find an LCD touch screen or a smartphone app option. If you do want a bit more control over the brewing process, Technivorm makes a near-identical model, the KBT-71192, with a manual brew basket.

The most important feature is the unique 1,400 Watt dual-coil copper heating system, which heats the water quickly to the ideal brewing temperature of between 195 ℉ and 205 ℉ (3). A showerhead feature then distributes the hot water evenly over the grounds for the best extraction.

The thermal carafe is another excellent addition, keeping the coffee warm for hours without the need for a heating element. Remember that a glass carafe on a heating plate is detrimental to both the taste of your coffee and your energy bills.

Value For Money – 4/5

The Moccamaster is a relatively expensive machine, costing slightly more than other SCAA-certified models like the Bonavita BV1900ts or the Behmor Brazen, but you’re paying for quality. Its simple and durable construction, paired with a 5-year warranty, makes it a great long-term investment.

So, is this coffee maker really for you?

If you want to drink great coffee from a well-made machine that’s built to last, this simple, award-winning option won’t let you down. It’s also great if you like to brew a big pot in the morning to drink all day, thanks to its insulated metal carafe.

Don’t buy this IF

If you’re on a budget, there are less expensive SCAA-certified coffee brewers that still meet all the criteria guaranteeing a great cup. Consider this coffee maker, made by Bonavita, for example.

For a machine with more features, check out our Oxo On Barista Brain review. The Barista Brain dispenses hot water using a microprocessor to mimic a perfect pour-over brew. Another coffee maker to consider is the Behmor Brazen, which comes in an app-enabled “smart” version.

The Moccamaster doesn’t brew single servings. If you want to brew just a cup at a time, our KitchenAid KMC0802 review highlights a machine that does just that.

The Bottom Line

All SCAA-certified coffee brewers guarantee a great cup of coffee. Still, the manufacturing quality of the Technivorm Moccamaster makes it a must-buy if you’re looking for reliability and longevity from your machine. Though you won’t find any fancy features here, you will find delicious coffee in your cup for years to come.
